Frugal February Friday, Day 3
Well here we are, underway with our Frugal February. Things have been going well and I am so excited to use up all of the food that we have in this house and be able to have a reset as we cruise towards March.
Today I found myself awake super early, probably because Nick's out of town. Nick travels a ton for business and sometimes it's hard to sleep without him.
Usually I would be up internet shopping when I can't sleep but today I stayed away from it and watched an Agatha Christie movie to pass the time. It's amazing how making conscious decisions can shape your life.
I was asked a really good question by one of my girlfriends and I thought I would address it on here…she was asking me what the purpose of using up all of our food in the pantry if then the cupboards are bare and we just have to start from scratch.
Here’s the answer…every once in a while it ends up that our cupboards are completely stocked and overflowing but it seems as if there is nothing to eat and what there is are not things that we want. You know what I mean…random sauces you don’t know how to use. A can of this, a jar of this and before you know it you just have random bits and bobs to try to cook with. I like having a month where you try to use up as much food as you can in an effort to get rid of all of those odds and ends and make room for new foods. It’s also nice to use things up before expiration dates pass and you have to throw foods away for no good reason. It just happens that our “use it up” month coincided with our frugal, no-spend month.
I am looking forward to March to have more room in our pantry to purchase tried and true foods our family loves. This will also come in handy for everyone because in March I am having surgery and will be unable to cook for at least a week. Thankfully I have the most amazing husband who is clearing his schedule to take care of me. He’ll be able to cook and make all of the food but I want to make sure that things are as easy for him as they can be. Having a fully stocked pantry will be a blessing for him after I’ve cleaned out the pantry.
Well, I hope that explains why we are using up all of our foods!
We had a very cozy, lazy day. Mostly because Emma has felt the worst she has today with all of her concussion symptoms. She’s been very nauseous, dizzy, and has had a terrible headache that wouldn’t go away. The doctor prescribed some anti-nausea medication and suggested I start pushing electrolytes. It seems to work because she was able to perk up and eat a cookie when I made them for her. I love having all of the pantry staples on hand to be able to whip up baked goodies when the mood (or need!) strikes. Very thankful!
Chocolate chip cookies can fix anything, can’t they?
Today we also had some of the sweetest friends/neighbors bring a gift basket for Emma. One of schoolmates, Autumn, now is one of our neighbors. If you’d have told me that her and I would be friends as grown-ups with our girls friends at the same age we played volleyball together, I never would have believed you. Isn’t it amazing how the Lord works? So thankful for community, friendship, and such thoughtfulness! Thank you dear Autumn and family!
Tonight we had the dinner I had planned…the drumsticks in the air fryer were incredible. And Calvin adores stuffing so it was nice to make him something that he was so excited to eat.
Tonight it’s a quiet evening of chores, cleaning, and relaxing. We all are getting ready to sit down to play a board game before going to bed. I will be getting the dough ready for cinnamon rolls so we can have those in the morning. It’s so helpful to have a meal plan so I can look and see what I need to pull out of the freezer to thaw, what I need to make ahead of time, etc.
The nice thing about today is that we had no where to go so going to the shops to spend money wasn’t even a temptation! We didn’t spend a dime today…so far we’re doing great at spending money!
