Flashfood on a Lazy Saturday, Frugal February Day 4

Today was a wonderful day.

Emma is still out of commission which meant that we didn’t have to do the normal tote and fetch of activities.

I woke up about 7 am (hooray for sleeping in), finished the cinnamon rolls, got them in the oven and then spent a sunny morning in my pjs.

It was divine.

Except when it is sunny and I have not a care in the world is when I want to go explore! Let’s find new shops! Go antiquing…the shopping bug was in my soul this morning which was hard to ignore…

BUT I DID IT!

Nick got home from Baltimore about 1 pm. On his way home I had him stop at our local cheese shop, Oh Mamma’s! Home of J2K cheeses, they have my favorite feta that I needed for tonight’s dinner: Mediterranean Lamb Bowls!

When he returned home he wanted to take a nap so Emma and I took the opportunity to run to the grocery store. It was great to get out of the house and Emma is supposed to be getting up and walking around so it was nice to have her company too.

I got a lot of things on my list for my monthly meal plan. I also got a lot of things from Flashfood. Which brings me to my next question…

Have you tried Flashfood? If you have, I’d love for you to comment below with what you thought.

If you haven’t tried Flashfood yet, do I have a deal for you!

You can use my code LIND40E7 to start using Flashfood! If your purchase is over $10 then you’ll have a $5.00 reward credit automatically applied! Voila! (In full transparency I also get $5.00 but I didn’t have this starting and I would have LOVED to have had one…sharing is caring, friends! <3)

Their mission is to save money and fight against food waste. As a nutrition educator this is something that I can totally get behind. Totally my jam.

The idea is that you can download their app to see what stores around you participate with Flashfood. You can then see what produce/deli/meats are available on their app. The store lists things that are still good but are nearing their expiration date. The idea is that you get a steal of a deal on foods and keep the store from having to throw the foods away.

This was my first time purchasing with Flashfood but I must say, I am already a fan. I got 9 items and saved so much money!

Here was my purchase:

Deli sliced Chicken BBQ $1.57, originally $3.15

Deli sliced pastrami $1.62, originally $3.25

1/2 gallon strawberry milk $1.14, originally $2.29

Capocolla $2.49, originally $4.99

Fruit Box $5.00

1/2 gallon chocolate milk $1.14, originally $2.29

Buttermilk $1.99, originally $3.99

Sour Cream and Cheese Mexican Dip $2.24, originally $4.49

Pre-made Pie Crust $1.99, originally $3.99

So there you go. A lot of the items I didn’t actually NEED but since they were so cheap I decided to treat the kids (hello flavored milks) and I have a charcuterie planned for a meal this month so thought that Capocollo would be a nice treat for that. The fruit box contained apples, bananas, clementines, and blood oranges. Nick and I weighed the fruits at the home and knowing roundish prices of produce decided that $5 for the box was a good deal. It was also nice to have a few of each fruit instead of an entire bag of one kind of fruit. Variety is the spice of life. That’s my refrigerator magnet saying of the day for ya:)

I spent $19.18 with Flashfood and saved $14.26. Such a great deal!

At Meijer I bought some fresh veggies and yogurt for dinner. I was making a tzaziki sauce and needed plain greek yogurt. A tub of it was $6.49! I was able to find cups for only $.69 and while this may have been more expensive per ounce the fact was that I didn’t need the amount of a whole tub so I was able to purchase what I needed for only $1.38 and use what I bought then let a tub of yogurt become a science experiment in the depths of my refrigerator. I also saw my friend Mary at Meijer. I sometimes think Mary is the only one reading this stinkin’ thing so HI TO MARY! Mary is one of those people that just makes life better. The girl oozes Jesus. Love you, girl!

When Emma and I got home we put groceries away and then the four of us went up to the third floor to work on unpacking some of the kids toys and items. The kids have a full attic area for their hang out room. With an ikea bookshelf floating in the middle of the room to seperate the space, there is basically a “man cave” (as Cal calls it) with legos, a couch, a tv, and the xbox, and Emma has a craft room area with storage, a sewing machine, a craft table, and a giant pile of stuffed animals.

It’s a pretty fun area, the natural light is incredible and you can see our whole little town from the window seats up there. I’ve always wanted window seats. Just call me Anne Shirley.

We were able to get about half of the boxes unpacked, the rest consolidated and smooshed against a wall before going downstairs to get dinner made. I had made pita bread earlier in the day so I made the tzatziki sauce, the ground lamb, and the tumeric rice for the bowls.

We then each assembled our bowls. While I was feeling super sketch about the ground lamb I actually really liked this dish! It was out of my normal food routine, it was super tasty and healthy, and the kids actually ate it. If you are wondering why in the world I would make some dish I didn’t want to eat and then had to hope and pray and jump around talking myself into eating it, then you should read this blog post about why in heaven’s name I am doing this.

After dinner the kids played a game and Nick and I walked the dog. When we got back we all played Uno Flip (jury is still out on if I like that game or not), and now Nick is doing the dishes while I finish this up. Thank goodness for men who will do dishes!

I hope you all had a wonderful Saturday. Whether you were lounging or lunging, Saturdays are a day for getting things done that you’ve wanted to do all week!

Loves!
