Taste and See…

Thursday was one of those glorious spring days that will live on in my memory. One where you envision yourself as Anne Shirley tossing open the windows below the green gables in Avonlea. If I had a rug beater I would have been Laura Ingalls, out beating the rugs with all my might in an effort to help ma with the spring cleaning. For Thursday was the day when any and all things are possible.

You know the days I mean. When you wake up and know, you just know that it is going to be a spring weather kind of day. The kind of day where the sun peeks its face over a neighboring victorian with all the beaming that it can give. The kind of day where gentle breezes incoming from the windows thrown open beckon you to have to be outside.

The children had Classical Conversations. Nick was faced with a line of blood work, a chiropractor appointment, and an MRI, so since the dear man was headed out anyway, he volunteered to do drop off. I felt free as a bird! And what a kind thing for a man to make a bird feel. <swoony>

I decided after watching Cass, the Clutterbug gal, that I was going to spend time decluttering my closets. Y’all know I am the queen of forgetting to take before and after photos but let’s just say, a lot of clothes went out. A lot. Many were too small, many were too large, and apparently I’m like the goldilocks of closet keepers. Good Lord, there were lots of clothes to get rid of. I also had a sensible talk with myself about being 40 and how many of the dress hemlines were questionable for a woman in her forties who is built like a tank. So those went.

It felt joyous and freeing. So much so that I continued on in my quest for tidy by going through my handbags, my purses, my shoes, and my active wear. There is so much more to sort through but it was such a good start.

After the hell-ish few months we’ve had, I’ve been slowly but surely coming around to the idea that I’ve got to make myself and my mental health some sort of priority. I wouldn’t say I’m going to make it the most important but it’s got to be up there. Maybe in the top 5.

And so decluttering so I can have some margin in life and make it easier to put clothes away was one of the things I decided to do for me. It felt amazing. It also felt amazing knowing that all of the clothes are being donated to Calvin’s Youth Group for a garage sale fundraiser.

After cleaning, and cleaning, and cleaning, it was time for supper. I made one of my favorite dishes, salmon and asparagus with a creamy lemon sauce, created by Jennifer at Turtle Creek Lane.

After supper Nick took Cal to practice soccer. He has his second game this Saturday and he gets to be goalie…again! Nick took him to the local park where they have regulation goals set up. His big dream has been to play goalie and so this has been such a big deal for him. He makes it to every practice, goes outside to practice on his own every day, and is so excited for game days. It is the sweetest thing and honestly something I never ever thought would be part of our lives.

While they were gone I had time to sit in my closet and reflect on how blessed I am to have the space. My closet is actually my dressing room and is about a 10x20 space with a balcony off of it. It is a wonderful little space with plenty of room to display my handbags, my grandmother’s shoe collection, and to have a vanity to get ready at. It is such a nice area to have.

When they came home Nick and I took Leroy on a walk and were able to discuss our crazy weekend plans! We can’t wait to get together with friends this weekend and get some work done around our properties. It’s going to be cold again next week so we’re soaking in as much of the spring loveliness as we can!

After that I had some time with the laundry, some alone time which felt alien and strange, and then it was time to pick Emma up from ballet.

Before the kids go to bed every night we have what has affectionately been nicknamed “tea time”. What started as a time with a read-aloud book and hot tea has morphed into a time that our family watches a television program and we have some sort of snack. So tonight we had hot cocoa and watched a bit of Lord of the Rings.

Then the kids helped out in the kitchen a bit, Nick made coffee for the morning, and it was off to bed.

As I brought Thursday to a close I was reminded of the verse in Psalms about tasting and seeing that the Lord is good. And He certainly is friends. We are so blessed by beauty and abundance all around us, if we’ll only have the eyes to see.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
— Psalm 34:8

I hope you are having a wonderful day and get a chance to spot some goodness around you today! Xo
