Citizens and the Toilet Paper Act of 2020

Friday we were talking about how Nick has had a cold since he came back from a work trip to Texas. Upon discussing it further, we decided that he should probably call the COVID-19 hotline just to make sure he was okay.

We were super surprised (and a bit freaked out) when he got moved to the next round of testing, having the right symptoms and the correct circumstances.

Friday evening, late, we were relieved following a virtual appointment that they do not think he needs to be tested. However, we were reminded that with his diabetes and with Calvin's autism that they both are in the high-risk category of catching it.

I had no idea and hadn't really thought of people with neurological and developmental disorders as being high-risk but it is right there, in black and white print.

And so we have been self-quarantining. We will not be participating in activities for a while and we are just fine with that. I am not really worried about getting it, I do not live in fear about one of us getting it, but rather carrying it and hence spreading it is what I want to stop.

And so I will be proactive to take care of others.

This all has been so valuable to discuss what it means to be a good citizen with our children. What is a good citizen?

Well for us, we've been teaching our family that a good citizen is someone who looks out for the wellbeing of others, whether they are a friend or fo, an aquaintance or a stranger. A good citizen is doing the responsible thing even if it is a nuisance to your own life. One example I hope my children remember from this has to do with toilet paper. We do not need toilet paper. At the outbreak of the toilet paper scare we had 14 rolls at home, thank you. But that didn't stop my husband from buying a giant pack, to give to others in need. I love that. A good citizen is someone who is known to be kind and helpful, not creating chaos or trouble in their wake.

All of these things we can be by self-quarantining.

I would like to extend again (I've mentioned this on social media) that if you need any help in any way, you can reach out to us. We will help you with ideas for homeschooling you kiddos, we've got toilet paper to share, meals we'd love to provide. Whatever it is, please reach out to us and we would be happy to help.

So happy quarantining, or not quarantining, whatever your bend on this is. No judging. We're here for you. And we have toilet paper!
