A Scary Fun Weekend

This is the fourth weekend I have written about since trying to write consistently.

I totally thought I would be writing this weekend’s post like I am a broken record…relaxing, relaxing, busy, busy, Nick comes home, Nick leaves again, kids activities, kids activities.

Except Friday evening happened.

Friday evening Nick wasn’t home yet because he was still in the process of flying back home from Raleigh. We were on our way to the church rummage sale that I mentioned in Thursday’s post. We were gathering our things and commenting that it smelled like natural gas in our house.

Now, to explain. We’ve been having this smell argument for a few weeks now. WEEKS! Someone would mention they smell gas, we’d all smell around and rule that the person was just crazy. When I came home from work a couple of days ago though I walked into the foyer and instantly thought the house smelled like gas. To the point that I immediately went to the kitchen to see if someone had accidentally bumped a know to a burner to release gas.

But tonight we all smelled it and it seemed to be worse than ever before. Nick was in the airport and told me to call the gas company. Long, lengthy ordeal made short, I called and we ended up having a leak from the meter going into our home. AND while the maintenance man was in our basement fixing everything he found we had a carbon monoxide leak from the vent from our water heater.

What the what? I was in shock and so thankful he had found that. I was also a little dumbfounded that our carbon monoxide detector never went off. The gas company man said that it was not just carbon monoxide but also several other gases that I could have also been smelling too on top of the natural gas. So lesson learned and I’m passing it to you…if you smell something funky just make the call to have everything checked out. Better safe than sorry. I feel so blessed we had someone catch the problem before it was too late!

After the scary situation we volunteered Friday and I made dough for cinnamon rolls for Saturday morning.

Nick arrived home around 1 in the morning, hallelujah!

Saturday morning I felt so blessed to be able to sit around the table as a whole family with streaming mugs of coffee and gooey cinnamon rolls. Life is simple and beautiful with the details. After Nick got the Carbon Monoxide leak fixed and tested to make sure we were all safe and sound, life continued on at it’s crazy fast speed as all Saturday mornings with two teenagers does.

We then loaded up the cars to head to soccer and down to the lake. Emma ride her cute yellow bicycle to ballet so Nick and I could both go to Calvin's soccer game where we watched him score a goal! The little smile/smirk on his face was so worth it!

Saturday afternoon we all packed up the cars and headed down to the lake. We took two vehicles because Nick loaded up his truck with tools and equipment for our last round of projects (for a while) which is building an outdoor shower area and new stairs off our deck.

Saturday night we visited with friends and had beef stroganoff.

Early in the morning I awoke to the sunlight streaming over the lake. It is so amazing every morning we’re at the cottage to be able to wake up with the lake view. I love being the only one open and being able to push the french doors open to the deck. This day there was a thick fog that hung over the lake and the sun was quickly burning it off. It was such a mysterious sight to see.

Sunday I surprised everyone with another pan of cinnamon rolls I had held back. I even remembered to pack the frosting. They were super yummy with our lake coffee in the Chemex. I think it’s my favorite way to make coffee. It is a process that is slow but not overly involved. The vulnerability of the steps makes me conscious of each movement and makes me feel so aware and grateful of the coffee when it’s ready. I realize that the phrase “the vulnerability of the steps…” sounds ridiculous but I’m sticking with it. ha.

After breakfast Nick and Emma went into the nearest town for some building supplies. Calvin and I stayed back to make some homemade lemonade which was super yummy. If you want to see some intense rock hard dad bod images well then you just keep scrolling.

Sunday we had such a great day. It was lazy and busy all the same. We got lots of work done on the outdoor shower and got the stairs pretty well laid out. For lunch we grilled hot dogs and cheddar and sour cream chips (my fave, how about yours?). Can we all appreciate Emma living her best life in one of the photos above? I mean, come on. Girl in hew new bathing suit drinking Ginger Ale and eating hot dogs at the lake…doesn’t get much better than that, right?

Emma and I then went out for a girls only boat ride in the afternoon on our friend, Rebecca’s, boat. It was so much fun and it felt so great to be back out on the water. Did I mention the weather was gorgeous?! No joke, amazing!

Then for dinner I made a salmon and asparagus cream sauce with rice. It’s one of my favorite meals and is so good!

Sunday night we stayed well past dinner, sat on the decks and talked with friends. Such a great time of fellowship with friends. I feel very grateful for good friends and good times. And the summer is just getting started! I’m also grateful to be alive after the gas/carbon monoxide scare. Yeesh!

I would love to hear how your weekend went and what you have going on this week?

I know this week I am prepping for Emma’s Sweet 16th Birthday party and I’ve got lots of little projects going on.

Comment below with your plans and how you spent your weekend. Let me know how I can cheer you on or how I can pray for you!

Loves! xo
